4 ways to keep your mind healthy

  1. Develop The Feeling of Gratitude

Gratitude carries a strong positive energy and is one of the pillars of happiness and self-love. Studies have shown that gratitude reduces social comparisons. Rather than becoming resentful toward people who have more money or better jobs—a major factor in reduced self-esteem—grateful people are able to appreciate other people’s accomplishments.

Gratitutue not only makes you better about yourself but it helps to appreciate others, being empathetic  instead of feeling angry.  When you are grateful for who you are and what you have in your life, you stress much less and you sleep better. This on its own is a big step towards health and mental wellness.

How to develop the feeling of Gratitude? Try these three techniques (make it a daily reading exercises):

  • Make a list of all the things about you (looks, skills, talents, character traits) you appreciate and be grateful for them
  • Make a list of all the things in your life (include your accomplishments) that happened or currently happening and which make you happy and grateful
  • Just before going to bed write down everything that happened on this day which you are pleased, happy and grateful for
  1. Value Yourself

Realize all the good things about yourself, all of the ones you like and are proud of. Forgive yourself for all that you are or done which you do not like. Instead of feeling ashamed be kind to yourself and remember that often is the low times and negative reactions that make the positive change in how you are as a person. We all learn and what makes you is your value. Avoid self-criticism and instead embrace what you are good at and what you love about yourself. Also, broaden your horizons by making time for your hobbies, learning and experiencing what catches your interest. Play big and notice the greatness in other people too.

  1. Get as Much Sleep as You Need

Whether it is 6 or 10 hours, our body knows how much sleep we need to feel rested, energised and happy. Surely you notice how great mood you wake up in after a long, quality and not disturbed sleep. This should not be a luxury but a necessity. Sleep helps to regulate the chemicals in our brain that transmit information. These chemicals are important in managing our moods and emotions. If we don’t get enough sleep, we can start to feel depressed or anxious. Without enough sleep our energy levels are low and we crave bad foods, which often makes us feel guilty about not taking care of our bodies. It is a negative circle which can be easily broken with good nights sleep.

Tip for getting a quality sleep:

At least one hour before your bed time, stop working. reading or watching TV, videos, news, films, anything that keeps your mind active. Instead go for a walk, take a bath, meditate, have a relaxed chat with someone or just listen a calming music.

  1. Be Sociable and Connect With Positive People

People with strong family or social connections are generally healthier than those who lack a support network. Just to pick up a phone and talk to a friend increases positive vibrations, makes our bodies relaxed and therefore, healthier and happier.

Do choose whom you interact with because our well-being is easily influenced by the moods, words, actions and reactions of our social circle. Surround yourself with supportive people and spend time with those with a postive mindset, who empower you rather than bringing you down. Whatever your personal and professional goals are, connect with people who aim for the same or are already where you want to be, as a person. There are plenty of clubs, classes, organizations and groups you can join and make friends. Being connected with people is important not just for our self-esteem, but also for providing support when we are not feeling too great.
